GENETIC COUNSELING

WHAT IS A GENETIC COUNSELOR?

Genetic counselors are medical professionals possessing specialized graduate degrees and clinical experience in genetics and counseling.  They are trained in accredited Master’s Degree programs and are individually certified via examinations and oversight by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Genetic counselors are committed to expanding their knowledge of advances in medical genetics by pursuing continuing education and professional networking.

WHAT DO GENETIC COUNSELORS PROVIDE FOR TEXAS HEALTH CARE CONSUMERS?

Three key specialized services provided by genetic counselors include: evaluating risk, communicating information, and assessing psychosocial and cultural impact related to genetic disease.

·          Evaluating risk for genetic disease requires obtaining and interpreting individual and family histories, evaluating existing medical records, and identifying and facilitating appropriate diagnostic studies and tests.

·          Communicating information regarding inheritance, natural history, diagnosis and management of genetic disease is achieved at the client’s level of education and knowledge, in a manner that facilitates decision-making.  This communication includes providing clear documentation to clients and medical providers.

·          Assessing psychological and cultural impact requires providing supportive, client centered counseling, utilizing appropriate resources to enhance adaptation, and tracking and evaluating the client’s response to genetic information.

HOW DO I FIND A GENETIC COUNSELOR?

Genetic counselors work in universities, public and private health care settings, in private practice, and in science related companies throughout Texas.  Some sites you may find practicing genetic counselors include ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis units, infertility treatment centers, pediatric clinics, cancer care centers, and disease specific clinics such as muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis and sickle cell care centers.
