Our History

The Texas Society of Genetic Counselors (TSGC) was established and incorporated in 2006. The roots of our current professional society were planted as the Texas Genetic Counselor Licensure Working Group (TGCLWG), an ad-hoc committee founded in 2002 for the pursuit of State Licensure in Texas. The original working group consisted of 13 dedicated members and was chaired by Aimee Williams from 2002-2004. In a few short years, it became evident to members of the TGCLWG that development of a broader professional organization would be a useful resource.

This new organization, under the umbrella of our national society, serves to unify the profession and provides support, networking and educational opportunities for genetic counselors within the State of Texas. The TSGC has grown to over 120 members. In 2007, the TSGC was approved by the National Society of Genetic Counselors as a State Chapter, in recognition that our mutual purposes and objectives are complementary and consistent.

The TSGC also sponsors an Annual Education Conference providing Continuing Education Units and networking opportunities for attendees. Obtaining licensure for genetic counselors in Texas and advocating for our profession continue to be goals of the organization.
