Genetic Counselor Appreciation Day 2026

By Aly Badalamenti

Last year, Genetic Counselor Appreciation Day took place on November 13, 2025. First beginning in 2017, this year marked a meaningful transition in the profession’s annual celebration: what was previously known as Genetic Counselor Awareness Day was officially renamed. This change reflects the growing presence of genetic counselors across clinical, research, industry, and public -health settings, while acknowledging that the profession deserves recognition not only for what it does, but for the expertise, compassion, and leadership genetic counselors bring to healthcare.

The Texas Society of Genetic Counselors (TSGC) expanded its efforts to honor and support genetic counselors by hosting a special continuing education event titled: “Building Presence, Empathy, and Connection in Genetic Counseling”. This virtual workshop led by Travia Fitzpatrick, an expert in listening and human connection, focused on strengthening howgenetic counselors connect with patients, colleagues, and themselves. The session focused on deepening empathy and curiosity, practicing presence during stress, fatigue, or burnout, and building meaningful connections in everyday conversations. The workshop blended teaching, breakout discussions, and reflective exercises, providing participants with immediately applicable communication tools. This served as a mode of meaningful professional development alongside the celebration.

Beyond this virtual event, Texas genetic counselors came together for in-person celebrations across the state, with gatherings held in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. These events allowed opportunities for connection, gratitude, and community-building among genetic counselors from diverse practice areas.

Additionally, the TSGC Instagram account (@TexasGCs) hosted a series of engaging online activities. Members were invited to participate in trivia highlighting key facts about genetic counseling in Texas and current TSGC initiatives. The page also showcased genetic counselors across the state through shout-outs and a Texas map spotlighting where genetic counselors live and work, highlighting the reach and impact of the profession.

TSGC extends a heartfelt appreciation to all genetic counselors across Texas. The dedication, compassion, and expertise of genetic counselors touch the lives of countless patients and families. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to advancing our field, supporting your communities, and leading the way in genomic healthcare. Texas is fortunate to have such remarkable professionals shaping its future.
